My current series depicts images of Alberta wildlife. I have been taking photos of wolves and foxes and their habitats around Alberta and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to observe an abundance of wildlife here.
I wish to portray each animal as an individual with its own unique personality whether it is a wolf, fox, horse or domestic pet. I try to bring each creature alive for the viewers so that they get the feeling that they have shared with me a momentary magical encounter with the animal themselves. I am so very grateful to be surrounded by so much natural beauty in my life, it is a constant source of inspiration.

I wish to paint evocative portraits that capture the personality of the sitter as well as some of the more elusive qualities that make the subject individual. I find the landscape of the face endlessly intriguing and rather than merely illustrating the face before me, I would like to reveal something that cannot be described, to find some inner quality that speaks of the essence of the subject.

I have enjoyed horses since I was a little girl in England. While appearing tranquil and domesticated, I find that they remain powerful, mysterious and unknowable. Although traditionally the horse has signified both power and freedom, I also try to portray the qualities of mystery and wisdom in my equine portraits.

This series is called “becoming” and depicts girls 12 and 13 years old. This is a fascinating age as it marks that important transitional period from childhood to adolescence. While my charming models have invariably shared a self-confident persona with me, I recognize that they are also volatile and unpredictable. They can be mature, affectionate and delightful, but also self-centred, moody, surly and backtalking. As this is a liminal stage when the individual is “neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between” (Victor Turner) I will be including portraits where the model shows a pensive, thoughtful moment, or is being moody as well as images of the girls being competent and powerful. Being a teenager has never been easy and I wish to portray some of the inconsistencies I have noted as these young women deal with the challenge of feeling invincible and invisible at the same time.

In this series entitled “_after”, historical portraits, ranging from 1460 up to 1907, are integrated with contemporary subjects to create a series of double portraits. Each is staged and painted in the manner of the original source with the inclusion of a contemporary model who bears an uncanny resemblance to the original sitter. My models are all interacting with their electronic devices but are not necessarily “intentionally disengaged” as was the case in my previous series “e.strange”. During the evolution of this series, the live model began to assume a more active role which offered a more theatrical presentation and greater possibilities for an underlying narrative. Stylistically the paintings are mostly inspired by European society portraits, which, like the modern Facebook page, often present an idealized version of the individual. I wish to comment on the differences in lifestyle over the centuries despite the enduring similarities in genetics.

In this series of 11 paintings called “e.strange”, young people are paired with beautiful horses offering a commentary on the effects of modern communication devices found world wide, contrasted with the ‘old world’ origins of the equestrian portrait.
Each painting portrays a seemingly contradictory set of parallel worlds, yet the two subjects, human and horse, are subtly connected through their unique personalities and appearance. While presented as a double portrait, the two subjects are nonetheless separated by the young person’s absorption in an unseen world, “intentionally disengaged” through cell phone and i-Pod, as well as by the horse’s seeming unawareness of its human counterpart.
I wonder about the directions in which contemporary digital communications are taking us and whether this constant exchange of information actually prohibits real communication.
